The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus in Parliament has demanded the immediate annulment of the recently concluded parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency and called for the disqualification of any candidate found to have engaged in vote buying.
In a statement issued and signed by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, the caucus expressed concern over widely circulated allegations of inducement during the NDC primary.
“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” the statement said, condemning the alleged acts as contrary to the party’s agenda to reset Ghana’s politics and uphold democratic values.
Calls for immediate action
Following extensive deliberations, the caucus resolved to formally communicate two key demands to the party’s Functional Executive Committee: the annulment of the Ayawaso East primary and a ban on any candidate proven to have engaged in vote buying from participating in a rerun of the election.
The call comes amid growing scrutiny of the primary, which has been overshadowed by reports that delegates allegedly received items such as 32-inch televisions and boiled eggs during the voting process.
Images and accounts of the alleged inducements circulated widely on social media, sparking public debate and internal unease within the party.
Investigation underway
The NDC has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the allegations.
The committee is chaired by former Minister of Information, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, with Mahama Ayariga and lawyer Emefa Fugah as members.
The panel is expected to submit its report by Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The party said the probe is part of its commitment to internal democracy, transparency, and ethical political conduct.
The committee will recommend sanctions and long-term reforms to curb inducement in internal elections.
High-profile repercussions
In a related development, President John Dramani Mahama has recalled Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, following allegations linked to the Ayawaso East primary.
The controversy highlights ongoing challenges within party primaries in Ghana, with the NDC Majority Caucus emphasizing that ensuring fair and credible internal elections is critical for restoring public confidence in democratic processes.
