CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the integrity, reputation and global competitiveness of African football following controversial incidents during the AFCON Morocco 2025 final.
Dr Motsepe described the events that overshadowed the championship match as “extremely disappointing” and pledged that the Confederation of African Football would take firm action to prevent a recurrence.
He disclosed that an extraordinary meeting of the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) has been convened to review existing CAF regulations, including the Disciplinary Code. The review aims to strengthen the authority of CAF’s judicial bodies to impose robust and effective sanctions for serious breaches of rules or conduct that bring the game into disrepute.
Dr Motsepe further noted that both the CAF Executive Committee and the presidents of the organisation’s 54 member associations share a unified resolve to protect the image of African football and CAF competitions. He emphasised that all decisions taken by CAF judicial bodies would be fully respected and enforced.
His remarks follow the sanctions issued by CAF’s Disciplinary Board on January 28, 2026, in connection with misconduct at the AFCON final. Dr Motsepe indicated that the regulatory review forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen governance, fairness and accountability across African football.
