The contest for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary ticket in Ayawaso East has shifted following the withdrawal of one of the aspirants, Abdul Salaam Daru, from the race.
Mr Daru announced his decision during the filing of nomination forms at the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters of the party, where five aspirants submitted their documents, although six individuals had earlier indicated interest in contesting the seat.
Explaining his decision, Mr Daru said he had stepped down after consultations with party officials and youth groups in the constituency. He also declared his support for Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, citing their previous working relationship and his confidence in her ability to advance the development agenda of Ayawaso East.
His withdrawal has been welcomed by sections of the party, who consider it a move that could help foster unity as the NDC prepares for the by-election.
The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of Mr Toure, prompting the Electoral Commission to fix 3 March 2026 for the by-election. In response, the NDC has commenced its internal selection processes, with the vetting of aspirants scheduled for Wednesday, 28 January 2026.
Party officials say the outcome of the party’s primaries will be critical as the NDC seeks to retain the seat in the upcoming by-election.
