A taxi driver has been shot dead at Tetegu, near Weija in the Greater Accra Region, following an encounter with a policewoman, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026. The policewoman involved also sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, according to a press statement issued by the Police Public Affairs Directorate on January 20.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting resulted from a confrontation between the taxi driver, who was driving a Hyundai i10, and the policewoman. The driver was pronounced dead on arrival at the Police Hospital.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah, acting Director-General of Public Affairs, stated that the policewoman was injured while attempting to leave the scene. “Investigation further indicates that the policewoman was hit by a vehicle and sustained injuries to her head and both legs,” the statement said.
Police retrieved several items from the scene, including one live 9mm round, a magazine, and one spent 9mm cartridge.
The Ghana Police Service said investigations into the circumstances of the shooting are ongoing, and updates will be provided as the process continues. The identities of both the deceased driver and the injured policewoman have not yet been released.
