The Upper West Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a motorbike theft syndicate operating in the region, arresting several suspects and recovering 17 stolen motorcycles.
The operation was triggered by a complaint filed on July 11, 2026, by a victim whose black Luojia motorbike with registration number M-21-UW 3512 was stolen from the Ghana National Fire Service premises in Jirapa. Acting on credible intelligence, police swiftly arrested Nasiru Muftawu at Loho in possession of the stolen motorcycle. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the theft and is assisting investigators.
Subsequent intelligence-driven raids led to the arrest of three more suspects: Basit Muftawu alias Posey (19), Issahaku Maruf alias Katel (22), and Mohammed Ali alias Geewaa (18). Additional exhibits linked to the criminal activities were retrieved from Rashid Kankan (20), Mutala Rashad (20), and Haruna Hamdan alias DJ (20).
Further investigations resulted in the recovery of 16 additional stolen motorbikes from locations including UBIDS, Chakor, and Glamon within the Wa Municipality.
All suspects were arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and have been remanded into police custody. They are scheduled to reappear in court on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The Upper West Regional Police Command has urged members of the public whose motorbikes have been stolen to visit the Wa District Police Headquarters with valid ownership documents for verification and possible retrieval.
In a statement, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crime and breaking up criminal networks across the region. It also called on residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support police operations and enhance public safety.
The successful operation has been welcomed by residents as a significant step toward curbing the rising incidents of motorbike theft in the Upper West Region.
