Mahama announces plan for 3 new technical universities

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish three new technical universities and build 50,000 housing units for teachers, placing education and skills development at the heart of his economic transformation agenda.

In his 2026 State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Friday, February 27, President Mahama said the expansion of technical universities is aimed at bridging Ghana’s skills gap and tackling persistent youth unemployment.

“Technical universities play a critical role in closing the skills gap and reducing youth unemployment by providing high-quality, industry-aligned, practice-oriented training that stimulates labour demand,” he said.

The President explained that the new institutions will not only increase enrolment but also serve as innovation hubs and centres for industrial collaboration, preparing a workforce capable of thriving in a technology-driven economy.

The initiative addresses growing concerns about graduate unemployment and the mismatch between academic qualifications and labour market needs, emphasizing practice-based training for sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, construction, and emerging industries.

Beyond tertiary education, President Mahama unveiled an ambitious housing programme to deliver 50,000 units for teachers, especially those in rural and underserved communities. The project will be implemented through partnerships with the District Assemblies Common Fund, Ghana Education Trust Fund, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to improving teachers’ living conditions, boosting morale, and ensuring equitable distribution of educators nationwide,” he stated.
