Harm a police officer and face the state – Mahama to criminal gangs

President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a strong warning to criminal and violent groups targeting officers of the Ghana Police Service, vowing a decisive state response to any attack on law enforcement personnel.

Speaking to police officers on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the Police Headquarters in Accra, the President said the government would relentlessly pursue and neutralise anyone who harms, injures or kills a police officer in the line of duty.

His remarks followed a recent memorial service held in honour of officers who lost their lives over the past year, many of whom were killed by armed robbers and other criminal elements.

“To serve notice that the police will deal very ruthlessly with anybody who harms, injures or kills a police officer, we will hunt them down and we will neutralise them,” President Mahama declared.

He stressed that the statement was intended as a firm deterrent to criminal networks across the country.
“If you shoot at a police officer, we will come after you,” he warned.

The President made the comments during a ceremony to officially present 100 pick-up vehicles to the Police Administration, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and improving police visibility nationwide.

He said the vehicle donation forms part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen security agencies and better protect officers as they perform their constitutional duties.

President Mahama also urged police personnel to remain professional and resolute in carrying out their responsibilities, assuring them of the government’s full support in the fight against crime.
