Gov’t moves to rename Kotoka International Airport

The government is preparing to present a bill to Parliament to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced.

Mr Ayariga made the disclosure on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, during a Parliamentary Leadership media briefing.

He said the proposed legislation forms part of the bills and regulations expected to be considered by the House during the current parliamentary sitting.

According to him, the Minister for Transport will formally lay the bill before Parliament to seek approval for the name change.

Under parliamentary procedures, any alteration to the name of a state facility must receive parliamentary approval before it can take legal effect.

Kotoka International Airport is Ghana’s main international airport and serves as the country’s primary aviation hub for passenger travel, cargo operations, and diplomatic movements.

A change in name would require amendments to official state records as well as aviation and regulatory documents.

Mr Ayariga did not indicate when the bill would be formally laid but noted that it is part of the Transport Ministry’s legislative agenda for the ongoing session, which commenced today.
