Gov’t halts planned sachet water price increase

The planned increase in the price of sachet water, which was scheduled to take effect on Monday, April 6, 2026, has been suspended following government intervention, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced.

In a statement issued, the Ministry commended the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) for their cooperation in halting the proposed price adjustment.

“This decision reflects our commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring market stability,” the Ministry stated.

The government assured the public that sachet water prices would remain unchanged, allowing consumers to continue purchasing the product at existing rates.

To address the challenges facing the sector, the Ministry has scheduled an emergency meeting with the leadership of both associations on Wednesday, April 8.

Although the Ministry did not outline the specific reasons for the proposed increase, producers have in recent months cited rising costs of raw materials, including plastic resins, fuel and water treatment chemicals, as well as exchange rate pressures.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with trade associations across sectors to resolve concerns promptly and maintain stability in the market.

“The Ministry remains steadfast in working with all trade associations to resolve issues swiftly and maintain stability in the market,” the statement added.

Sachet water remains an essential commodity for millions of Ghanaians, particularly in urban and peri-urban communities where access to piped water is limited. Any sustained increase in prices could significantly affect household budgets and public health.

Further details are expected following the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting.
