Gospel legend Ron Kenoly dies at 81

Renowned American gospel singer, worship leader, and pastor Ron Kenoly has died at the age of 81, with news of his passing first shared by his long-time music director on social media, prompting an outpouring of tributes.

American evangelist Bishop Francis Wale Oke also confirmed the news in a Facebook post, paying tribute to Kenoly as a humble servant of God and a true worshipper. He described the late singer as a vessel of grace who ministered with deep spiritual conviction, carrying the presence of God wherever he went.

According to Bishop Oke, Kenoly’s ministry touched hearts and nations, especially during visits to Nigeria and other parts of the world. He noted that although many were saddened by the loss, they took comfort in the belief that Kenoly’s life of devotion would continue to inspire future generations.

Kenoly, widely regarded as a leading figure in contemporary worship music, left a lasting impact on global Christianity. His 1992 album Lift Him Up became a landmark release, helping to popularise energetic, participatory worship styles that spread across churches worldwide.

Songs such as Ancient of Days and Jesus Is Alive remain popular in churches across Africa, Europe, and beyond.

Over a career spanning several decades, he released several acclaimed albums, including Ron Kenoly, God Is Able, Welcome Home, and Sing Out with One Voice. His music blended gospel, contemporary Christian sounds, and praise choruses, often delivered with large choirs and lively congregational participation.

Beyond his music career, Kenoly served as a pastor and worship leader at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California, where he ministered for many years. He was also a sought-after speaker and worship facilitator at international conferences and crusades, particularly in Africa, where his music resonated deeply.
