The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has officially commissioned a 40,000-litre capacity Small-Town Water Supply System for the Mehuntem community, a move aimed at addressing long-standing water challenges and promoting sustainable access to safe drinking water.
The handover took place on February 12, 2026, as part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in its host communities.
The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which seeks to ensure universal, affordable, and equitable access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 2030, while also improving water quality and reducing pollution.
Commitment beyond mine operations
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Abdel Razak Yakubu, Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its host communities even as the timeline for handing over the Damang mine to the government approaches.
“Gold Fields Ghana will continue to be present within its host communities until we hand over the mine to government. Our development initiatives will not halt simply because operations are being transferred,” he said.
“That is why we have invested US$38,822.30 (GH₵365,000) to provide a 40,000-litre water system for Mehuntem.”
Facility features and community benefits
The newly commissioned water facility comprises a concrete pedestal and a 40,000-litre storage tank designed to serve the entire community.
Residents are able to connect the water system directly to their homes, ensuring convenient access to clean and safe drinking water.
“The assembly has also provided chlorine to treat the water, guaranteeing safe consumption,” Yakubu added.
“It is heartwarming that Gold Fields has been able to provide water supply systems across all its host communities.”
Collaboration for sustainability
The project was implemented in partnership with the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Assembly (PHMA) and the Mehuntem Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committee.
This collaborative approach was intended to ensure sustainability, community ownership, and the long-term success of the water supply system.
By expanding access to clean water and strengthening local infrastructure, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation continues to advance its development agenda while supporting national efforts to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
