The Ghana Police Service has taken legal action to stop Yvonne Nelson’s upcoming demonstration against the country’s erratic power supply, known as ‘dumsor’.

The High Court has been asked to grant an injunction, just days before the scheduled protest on May 25, 2024.

The police had previously urged the organizers to change the venue, citing security concerns.

Yvonne Nelson, who has been affected by the intermittent power cuts in her business, had organized a similar protest in 2015. She and her team met with the police to notify them of the planned protest, as required by law.

However, the police opposed the proposed route, citing concerns about the endpoint, Revolution Square, being too close to the Jubilee House, a security zone. They also raised issues with the planned midnight ending. The organizers disagreed, arguing that the endpoint was far enough from the Jubilee House and that there were no issues with the end time.

The police have now filed an application to halt the demonstration, citing the Public Order Act.

The case is scheduled for a hearing on May 24, just a day before the planned protest.
