Finance Minister to announce major cocoa sector reforms

Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minister of Finance will on Thursday, February 12, hold a press conference at the Presidency to announce to Ghanaians comprehensive measures taken by Cabinet to address challenges facing the nation’s cocoa sector.

The announcement was made by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications.

Addressing the Presidential Press Corps at the Presidency, Mr Ofosu said they had just concluded a lengthy Cabinet meeting, which was an emergency session to discuss the cocoa sector and matters arising there.

He said at the end of the emergency session, decisive measures had been agreed upon regarding expedited payment of cocoa farmers.

He noted that it was also regarded the implementation of the most drastic reforms in the cocoa sector, with a view to achieve quantum leaps in domestic processing of cocoa; as opposed to exports of raw materials and various reforms to be carried out at Cocobod.

This was to ensure more effective administration and management of the cocoa sector, he said.

“… at 11:00am tomorrow, the finance minister will address the ripple of Ghana and announce these far-reaching measures as agreed upon at the end of the cabinet meeting today,” the Minister stated.

Mr Ofosu reiterated that measures had been agreed upon by Cabinet for expedited payments of cocoa farmers.
