Film industry to benefit from GH¢20M allocation – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is allocating GH¢20 million to develop Ghana’s film industry, as part of broader support for the nation’s creative sectors.

Delivering his second State of the Nation Address on February 27, he said the funding will be included in the national budget for culture and tourism. On the role of new media, he noted, “Creatives using the new media are giving our nation greater prominence than we could have achieved through any first‑class traditional media outlet.”

The President further outlined plans to refurbish the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), stating, “We are going to undertake the refurbishment of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) to restore it to its iconic past.” He added that procurement and integrity assessments are ongoing so that renovation work can begin soon. Mahama emphasized that the refurbishment is part of building the necessary infrastructure to host national and international events that will benefit both the creative and film sectors.

He also highlighted that the AICC alone is insufficient to meet Ghana’s ambitions, saying, “Work will also commence this year on a befitting convention and creative events centre,” which is intended to position Ghana as West Africa’s destination for meetings, conferences, musical concerts, and entertainment, creating both demand and platforms for the film industry.

On government support for the sector, Mahama assured that, “We are committed to the promotion and growth of the creative industry,” emphasizing political and diplomatic backing for creatives in Ghana.
