Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has increased the producer price of cocoa by GH¢63 per 64-kilogramme bag for the 2026/2027 cocoa season, taking the new price to GH¢2,650 from GH¢2,587 in the 2025/2026 season.
The adjustment translates into a GH¢1,008 increase in the producer price of a tonne of cocoa, which comprises 16 bags of 64 kilogrammes.
The price per tonne has consequently risen from GH¢41,392 in the 2025/2026 season to GH¢42,400 for the 2026/2027 season.
The new price represents an increase of 2.4 % over the previous season and, according to the figures provided, amounts to 71.18% of the realised gross free-on-board (FOB) value of cocoa.
The latest adjustment comes against the backdrop of significant changes in cocoa producer prices over the past two seasons, including increases and a subsequent reduction in the price paid to farmers.
Price changes under previous season
During the 2024/2025 crop season, the producer price of a 64-kilogramme bag was increased from GH¢3,000 in September to GH¢3,100 in November.
The following season saw another series of adjustments.
On August 4, 2025, the government increased the producer price to GH¢3,228.75 per 64-kilogramme bag, representing 70% of the average gross FOB price.
The increase, however, attracted public criticism, with concerns that the adjustment was insignificant against expectations surrounding cocoa producer prices.
The criticism was also linked to a campaign promise made by the then opposition party to raise the producer price to GH¢7,000 per bag.
Following the public uproar, the government subsequently increased the producer price to GH¢3,625 per 64-kilogramme bag, effective October 3, 2025.
The price was later reduced to GH¢2,587, creating a significant change from the GH¢3,625 level.
New season price
For the 2026/2027 season, COCOBOD has now set the producer price at GH¢2,650 per 64-kilogramme bag.
The GH¢63 increase means farmers will receive GH¢63 more for each 64-kilogramme bag compared with the price of GH¢2,587 applicable in the 2025/2026 season.
At the tonne level, the new producer price of GH¢42,400 represents the equivalent of 16 bags and is GH¢1,008 higher than the previous season’s GH¢41,392.
The adjustment therefore represents a 2.4% increase in the producer price between the two cocoa seasons.
The new pricing structure also places the producer share at 71.18% of the realised gross FOB value of cocoa, according to the figures provided.
The latest adjustment marks another phase in the recent volatility in Ghana’s cocoa pricing regime, with the producer price moving through several levels over the past two seasons.
While the 2026/2027 price is higher than the GH¢2,587 at which the previous season ended, it remains below the GH¢3,625 price that was announced in October 2025 before the subsequent downward revision to GH¢2,587.
The new price will therefore determine the producer revenue earned by cocoa farmers as the country enters the 2026/2027 cocoa season.
