CAF President Patrice Motsepe met Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama at the Flagstaff House in Accra today, as part of his visit to Ghana for key football engagements.
Motsepe, who arrived earlier in the morning to a rousing welcome at Kotoka International Airport, was received by Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and cheering football fans.
His visit underlines CAF’s renewed focus on youth empowerment through football development across Africa.
During their meeting, Motsepe and President Mahama discussed strategies to strengthen football structures in Ghana and across the continent. Central to their talks was how football can serve as a catalyst for social development, education, and youth employment opportunities.
Motsepe, a billionaire businessman from South Africa, emphasized CAF’s commitment to supporting grassroots initiatives like the African Schools Football Championship, whose final he will attend during his stay in Ghana.
The visit comes ahead of the CAF Executive Committee meeting to be chaired by Motsepe in Accra, where crucial leadership appointments are expected to be confirmed following last month’s elections.
Motsepe’s engagement with President Mahama also signals CAF’s broader ambition to work closely with African governments to harness the power of football as a tool for national development.
For Ghana, the meeting offers a significant opportunity to strengthen ties with CAF, particularly with GFA President Kurt Okraku expected to be elevated to one of CAF’s new Vice-President roles.
Motsepe’s visit reflects growing momentum around football’s role in Africa’s future, with stakeholders eager to see sport used to drive change beyond the pitch.
