MobileMoney FinTech LTD (MMFL) has opened applications for the MoMo FinTech Lab, a nationwide innovation programme designed to identify, develop and accelerate the next generation of Ghanaian FinTech innovators.
Launched on August 12, 2026, at the Accra Marriott Hotel, the initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Bank of Ghana and other key players in the FinTech ecosystem.
The programme is open to students, developers, entrepreneurs, startups and innovators with ideas capable of addressing everyday challenges, expanding financial inclusion and strengthening Ghana’s digital financial services sector.
Anchored on the theme “Build with MoMo” and the tagline “Build the Next Wave of FinTech,” the initiative seeks to create a platform where promising ideas can be transformed into practical, scalable and commercially viable solutions.
The programme will bring together regulators, financial institutions, FinTech companies, technology partners, academia, investors and innovation hubs to provide participants with technical support, industry expertise, mentorship and access to relevant networks.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of MMFL, Shaibu Haruna, said the initiative was aimed at strengthening Ghana’s FinTech talent pipeline while providing innovators with opportunities to develop solutions with practical relevance.
He said the programme would help bridge the gap between innovative ideas and solutions that could be deployed to address real economic and social challenges.
The Head of the FinTech and Innovation Office at the Bank of Ghana, Mr Owureku Asare, emphasised the importance of collaboration between regulators and industry players in promoting responsible innovation.
He said regulatory cooperation would be essential to building a trusted, secure and inclusive digital financial ecosystem capable of serving the needs of a growing digital economy.
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, meanwhile, challenged Ghanaian innovators to use the platform to develop homegrown FinTech solutions that could compete beyond the Ghanaian market.
He said Ghana possessed the talent, creativity and ideas required to shape its own digital future and urged innovators to move beyond dependence on technologies developed elsewhere.
Four innovation areas
The MoMo FinTech Lab will focus on four broad innovation tracks: Everyday Payments and Financial Access; Business and Merchant Growth Tools; Trust, Security and Digital Identity; and Future Finance and Connected Ecosystems.
The tracks are intended to encourage solutions that improve payment experiences, expand access to financial services, support businesses and merchants, strengthen digital trust and security, and explore emerging opportunities in financial technology.
Applications are open to individuals and teams and are free of charge.
Interested applicants can apply through the MoMo App by logging in with their MoMo number and PIN or using biometrics, selecting the MoMo FinTech Lab banner on the home page and completing the application form.
Applicants will be required to provide their personal or team details, describe their FinTech idea or solution and indicate the innovation track under which their proposal falls. Supporting information may also be attached where required.
The application deadline is September 30, 2026.
Cash, mentorship and incubation
The final 12 entries will receive a comprehensive prize and support package designed to help turn their ideas into viable businesses.
The package includes cash awards of up to GH¢100,000, digital devices, a bootcamp, hackathon, mentorship, incubation support and industry exposure.
Finalists will also participate in a National Demo Day, providing an opportunity to pitch their solutions directly to industry stakeholders and potential partners and investors.
The programme is expected to provide participants with practical exposure to the requirements of developing, testing and scaling FinTech solutions in a regulated financial environment.
MMFL is encouraging innovators from across the country to take advantage of the initiative to develop solutions that can improve access to financial services, support businesses and contribute to the growth of Ghana’s digital economy.
The initiative is being supported by ecosystem partners and sponsors including Hubtel, APPSN Mobile, Zenith Bank, Korba, Blue Penguin and Jumo, among others.
Through the collaboration, MMFL says it hopes to strengthen the links between innovation, regulation, finance and technology while creating a stronger pipeline of Ghanaian FinTech solutions capable of serving both local and international markets.
