Mr Samson Deen, President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has announced a special cash reward scheme for Ghana’s para-athletes competing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Under the initiative, Ghanaian para-athletes would receive £3,000 for a gold medal, £2,000 for silver and £1,000 for bronze, offering financial incentives for medal-winning performances.
The announcement came after Ghana secured its first medal of the Games through Zinabu Issah, who won silver in the women’s F57 shot put with a season-best throw of 8.65 metres.
Issah is set to receive a £2,000 cash award during a presentation ceremony in Glasgow later Tuesday.
“Our athletes have worked tirelessly to represent Ghana with pride,” Deen said in a statement.
“This bonus is our way of recognising their sacrifice, determination and excellence. We want every athlete to know that their achievements are valued, and we remain committed to supporting them in their pursuit of success.”
Mr Deen congratulated Issah on becoming Ghana’s first medallist at the Games, describing her achievement as a source of national pride and an inspiration to young athletes and persons with disabilities across Ghana and Africa.
He also urged the remaining members of Team Ghana to remain focused in their events, expressing confidence that the team could add to its medal tally before the end of the Games.
“Wear the Ghana colours with pride. Every performance you deliver sends a powerful message that disability is never a limitation to greatness,” Deen said.
According to the NPC Ghana president, the medal bonus programme is intended to reward excellence and motivate athletes to pursue podium finishes at major international competitions.
Looking beyond the Commonwealth Games, Deen said Ghana would introduce an enhanced medal incentive scheme ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
Deen reaffirmed his commitment to improving athlete welfare and strengthening support structures for para sports, saying Ghana’s athletes deserved greater recognition and investment as they pursue success on the international stage.
