NADMO orders Weija Dam spillway residents to evacuate immediately

Residents living along the Weija Dam spillway have been urged to move to higher ground immediately after the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality announced the opening of the dam’s spill gates to release excess water.

In an emergency notice issued on Monday, NADMO said rising inflows from the Nsawam area had pushed water levels in the Weija Dam reservoir close to its maximum capacity, making controlled spillage necessary to safeguard the dam.

According to the agency, three spill gates have been opened, each releasing water at a height of 30 inches and at high intensity.

The controlled release is expected to increase water levels downstream, with several communities facing a heightened risk of flooding.

NADMO warned residents in low-lying areas not to delay evacuation until floodwaters become visible.

“Residents must leave low areas immediately—don’t wait to see the water. Move to higher ground,” the agency said.

The organisation also appealed to residents to assist vulnerable neighbours, particularly the elderly, children and people without access to mobile phones, by ensuring they receive the evacuation warning in time.

Residents have been advised to carry only essential belongings, including identification documents, prescribed medication, mobile phones and chargers, cash and other important documents, preferably packed in waterproof bags.

NADMO further cautioned against attempting to walk or drive through floodwaters.

“Avoid crossing floodwaters—six inches of moving water can knock a person down, while two feet of water can sweep away a vehicle,” the agency warned.

Communities identified as being at risk include Tetegu, Weija, SCC, Old Barrier, Oblogo, Mallam Junction, Aplaku, Bortianor, parts of Dansoman and parts of Sampah.

Residents in these areas have been urged to relocate to safer locations without delay.

People requiring emergency assistance have been advised to contact NADMO through the national emergency line, 112, or call 0302 964 884, 0244 429 315 or 0244 480 355. The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Director of NADMO can also be reached on 0244 429 315.
