Kumasi: Lawyer, 26, dies during Ghana World Cup celebrations

A 26-year-old private legal practitioner, Sara Araba Tettey, has died in Kumasi after what began as a night of jubilation over Ghana’s World Cup victory over Panama on Wednesday, June 17, turned into sudden tragedy.

Ms Tettey, a newly qualified lawyer and alumna of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), reportedly collapsed after celebrating the Black Stars’ late win with friends at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the KNUST campus.

What was meant to be a night of national celebration quickly descended into panic as she became unresponsive moments after the final whistle, when jubilation erupted among patrons at the hostel.

She was immediately rushed to the KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to resuscitate her.

Sources said cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered for about 45 minutes in a desperate effort to revive her, but she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Ms Tettey, who was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year and worked with O & A Legal Consult, was described by colleagues as one of the promising young lawyers of her generation.

Her sudden death has therefore sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity, especially among her peers at KNUST and the Ghana School of Law.

Friends and former classmates have been paying emotional tributes on social media, describing her—fondly known as “Araba Tettey”—as intelligent, hardworking and full of promise, with a legal career only just beginning to take shape.

Her passing has cast a sombre shadow over Ghana’s World Cup celebrations, turning a moment of sporting joy into one of national grief.

The body has been deposited at the hospital morgue pending autopsy and funeral arrangements.
