Carlos Queiroz names 23-man squad for Mexico friendly

Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has announced a 23-man squad for the Black Stars’ international friendly against the Mexico national team scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026.

The balanced squad made up of foreign-based professionals, standout performers from the Ghana Premier League, and a few promising U-23 players as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.

Notable returnees include Majeed Ashimeru and Felix Afena-Gyan, both of whom rejoin the national team after periods of absence.

Ashimeru returns following a long spell on the sidelines due to a muscle injury that limited his appearances for club and country, while Afena-Gyan makes his comeback after last featuring for Ghana in May 2025 against Trinidad and Tobago at the Unity Cup in London.

Several emerging talents have also earned call-ups following impressive club performances, including Abdul Aziz Issah of Barcelona B, Birmingham City winger Ibrahim Osman, Joseph Opoku, and Ebenezer Annan of AS Saint-Étienne.

Home-based players were not overlooked, with Medeama SC midfielder Salim Adams leading the local contingent. He is joined by Nations FC captain Razak Simpson, Heart of Lions’ Ebenezer Abban, and Dreams FC’s Ebenezer Adade.

The goalkeeping department features Solomon Agbasi, Paul Reverson of Ajax FC, and Gidios Aseako, while the defensive unit includes Nathaniel Adjei, Oscar Oppong, and Annan.

In midfield, players such as Emmanuel Edjei, Augustine Boakye, and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi are expected to provide creativity and control, while the attack is led by Afena-Gyan, Osman, Prince Amoako, and Francis Amuzu.

Key senior players including Thomas Partey and Jordan Ayew have been left out of the squad, as Queiroz uses the friendly to assess squad depth and give opportunities to younger players ahead of the Mundial.

The upcoming friendly forms part of Ghana’s build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are drawn in a group alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
