Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, has cautioned against the acceptance of LGBTQI+ practices, warning that such developments could have far-reaching implications for societal stability.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on Thursday, April 2, 2026, he argued that the family remains the foundation of society and must be protected. “The family is society in microcosm,” he said. “If you want to destroy any society, begin by destroying the family.”
He urged John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his stance on LGBTQI+ issues, expressing concern about the potential impact on Ghanaian cultural values and family structures.
Sheikh Shaibu was reacting to recent remarks by the President that “the issue of LGBTQI is not the most important issue we face as a nation,” stating that broader societal consequences must be taken into account when such matters are discussed.
He maintained that any attempt to undermine family structures constitutes, in his view, a threat to the nation, and called for a more cautious approach to conversations around rights and social change.
While acknowledging the importance of human rights, Sheikh Shaibu reiterated his position that LGBTQI+ practices raise significant concerns within the Ghanaian cultural context. “For us in Ghana, culturally speaking, that is why we say it is objectionable and immoral,” he said.
He further urged young people to uphold cultural values and national identity, stressing the importance of preserving long-standing societal norms.
