Potsin Junction: Fuel tanker explosion destroys chop bar, causes gridlock

A petrol tanker has exploded at Potsin Junction in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, destroying property and causing heavy traffic congestion along the Kasoa–Cape Coast road.

The incident is reported to have occurred around 5:30 a.m. today (March 17, 2026). No deaths were recorded, while the driver of the tanker is said to have escaped before the explosion.

The tanker was reportedly travelling from Accra towards the Central Region when it hit a section of the road under construction, lost control and overturned, leading to the explosion.

A worker at a nearby chop bar, which was engulfed by the inferno, said she and her colleagues had to flee for their lives when the tanker fell and began to roll over, only to hear the explosion moments later.

She explained that they had woken up at about 3 a.m. and were preparing meals for the day when the accident occurred.

The owner of the facility said he had been operating the chop bar since 1983 and had now lost everything.

The Kasoa–Cape Coast road is currently under construction, with sections of the stretch posing challenges to motorists.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Apam Fire Station, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Police Service are at the scene working to contain the situation.

The incident has resulted in heavy traffic gridlock on the busy highway, with movement severely affected as emergency teams manage the aftermath.
