Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Inspector General of Police (IGP), has hosted senior officials from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for high-level discussions on cooperation and modern policing practices.
A statement issued said the NYPD delegation was received at Police Headquarters by the IGP and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB).
According to the release, discussions focused on operational cooperation, professional exchange, and the use of technology in policing, including data-driven models, digital investigative tools, and integrated intelligence platforms.
It said the dialogue also covered officer safety, welfare, training, equipment, and institutional support systems.
The release said police accountability within a democratic framework was discussed, with the NYPD sharing experiences on transparency, internal oversight, and community trust, while the Ghana Police Service (GPS) outlined reforms and accountability mechanisms.
It noted that the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the NYPD and GPS was reviewed, emphasising sustained engagement, information sharing, training opportunities, and collaboration on transnational crime investigations.
Beyond POMAB meetings, the NYPD delegation engaged operational units including the Criminal Investigation Department, INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate, focusing on investigative cooperation, intelligence coordination, and transnational crime threats.
The release said the delegation toured the Joint Operations Center (JOC) at Police Headquarters, receiving a briefing on Ghana’s integrated command and control system for nationwide policing, incident response, and intelligence monitoring.
It said discussions also covered officer exchange programmes, including the placement of a senior NYPD detective at GPS Headquarters and embedding a senior Ghana Police officer within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau to strengthen collaboration.
The release said the delegation held courtesy meetings with the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the National Intelligence Bureau, led by Director-General Charles Alhassan Kipo, focusing on national security coordination and intelligence sharing.
It noted that the NYPD team also paid a courtesy call on the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Rolf Olson, to further discussions on bilateral law enforcement cooperation.
