Police tightens security at Mamprobi Polyclinic after baby theft

The Accra Regional Police Command has stepped up security at the Mamprobi Polyclinic following the theft of a four-day-old infant.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, confirmed that on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the measures are intended to prevent similar incidents and reassure both patients and staff of their safety.

She explained that the enhanced protocols include stricter monitoring of visitors and staff, as well as tighter protection arrangements for newborns to guard against possible abduction.

Police also arrested the suspect, 33-year-old Latifa Iddrisu, a cloth seller in Accra, on Wednesday, February 18. She was found at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with the baby.

The suspect was subsequently transferred to the Mamprobi Polyclinic under the Dansoman Divisional Police Command for questioning and identification procedures.

According to the Police, the infant’s mother was invited to identify the child and confirmed the baby through a distinctive birthmark on the left leg. The verification led to the safe reunion of the child with the family, bringing relief after an anxious period for the parents.

“We have been able to improve security within the Mamprobi Polyclinic and extend it to other hospitals as well. She is to face the court on Thursday, and after the court proceedings, I should be able to give an update on the ruling,” she added.

The suspect was captured on the clinic’s CCTV cameras, which show her moving suspiciously within the premises before the alleged abduction.

Security personnel immediately alerted police, who have begun reviewing the footage to identify and track down the individual involved.

Hospital management confirmed that the incident has left staff and patients shocked.
