A police officer has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers during an attack on the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Upper East Region.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 8th February 2026, around 8:00 p.m. Two officers were travelling from Widnaba towards Zebilla when they reportedly came across an ongoing armed robbery along the road.
According to reports, the robbers opened fire upon seeing the officers, fatally wounding one of them. The injured officer, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was rushed by a responding police team to Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, the Regional Police Command said it has launched a full-scale investigation and deployed a special operation to track down and apprehend all individuals involved in the attack.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents in the Bawku Division and surrounding areas, despite growing security challenges on some major road networks.
