A routine police patrol in Dzorwulu has led to the arrest of two suspected street robbers and the recovery of several stolen mobile phones and cash, exposing what police say is a wider robbery network operating in Accra.
The Kotobabi District Police Command confirmed the arrest of Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, following an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
According to police, officers on patrol on a service motorbike spotted the suspects riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike. The two men were dressed in black and wearing helmets, with the passenger reportedly holding a cutlass.
Upon noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee, leading to a chase during which warning shots were fired. The pursuit ended near the Nigerian High Commission at Roman Ridge after the suspects lost control of the motorbike and fell. They attempted to escape on foot but were tracked and arrested.
A search conducted on the suspects uncovered several items believed to be stolen, including multiple mobile phones of different brands, a necklace, and cash amounting to GH¢2,690 and USD 2. The suspects sustained injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital.
During interrogation, police said the suspects admitted to committing the robberies and confessed to attacking several victims across the Accra Metropolis. Several victims have since identified both the suspects and their recovered mobile phones, recounting how they were threatened and robbed.
Further investigations led to the arrest of four additional accomplices, police said.
Gletsu and Sheriff have been remanded into police custody, arraigned before court, and are expected to reappear on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The Accra Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling street robbery and other criminal activities within the metropolis.
