The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested 22 Togolese nationals suspected of involvement in illegal mining activities in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
The arrest took place on January 23, when a police intelligence team intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12, driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu.
According to preliminary investigations, the occupants of the vehicle are Togolese nationals who were en route to Tuntumba, a community known as a hotspot for illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. Police say the suspects intended to engage in unlawful mining operations upon arrival.
The suspects are currently being held in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service to undergo the appropriate immigration and legal procedures.
Police officials indicated that investigations are ongoing, adding that further updates will be provided as the case develops.
