GTA moves to make Ghana an all-year tourism destination

After December once again emerged as Ghana’s peak tourism period, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has outlined plans to reposition the country as a year-round destination.

Speaking at a media engagement at Accra City Hotel on Tuesday, January 13, she noted that while last December significantly boosted arrivals, sustaining the gains requires stronger regional participation, better coordination among stakeholders, and a shift beyond branding Ghana solely as a December hub.

“Tourism is now creating real opportunities — jobs for youth, openings for entrepreneurs, empowerment for creatives, and growth for content creators sharing Ghana’s story in fresh and compelling ways. At GTA, we are focused on harnessing this energy, supporting talent, raising standards, and ensuring growth is inclusive and sustainable. That is why we are positioning Ghana not just as a December destination but as an all-year tourism powerhouse,” she said.

Maame Efua Houadjeto highlighted the growing global appreciation of Ghana’s culture, music, fashion, cuisine, and heritage, emphasizing tourism’s role in youth employment. She urged the media to tell balanced stories that enhance Ghana’s positive image internationally.

Deputy CEOs of GTA — Ekow Sampson (Operations), Bernard Anane Nsiah (General Services), and Abeiku Aggrey Santana (Marketing and Special Duties) — also addressed the media. They stressed that negative reporting could undermine progress and called for insightful, research-based coverage to promote Ghana’s tourism growth.

The CEO further revealed government plans to improve infrastructure around popular tourist sites, including repairing bad road networks and resuming construction on the long-delayed Marine Drive project.

“I can confirm that both projects are set to begin this year. The sector minister has already presented them to the relevant authorities, and the Marine Drive ban has been lifted,” she stated.
