Senegal booked a place in the final of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 with a hard-earned 1–0 victory over record champions Egypt in Wednesday’s semi-final in Tangier.
In a tightly contested clash between two African heavyweights, the Teranga Lions displayed composure and tactical discipline to deny an Egyptian side chasing a historic eighth continental title.
The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when captain Sadio Mané struck decisively from outside the box, curling a right-footed effort into the bottom left corner after a swift attacking move that briefly unsettled Egypt’s defence.
Egypt responded with urgency, committing men forward in search of an equaliser. Mohamed Salah spearheaded the push, probing Senegal’s backline with pace and creativity, but the Pharaohs were repeatedly thwarted by a resolute defence and assured goalkeeping.
Senegal remained organised and calm under late pressure, expertly managing the closing stages to secure the narrow win.
The victory rekindles memories of the sides’ 2021 AFCON final meeting, where Senegal also emerged victorious on penalties to claim their first continental crown. This time, the Teranga Lions required no shootout, sealing progression within regulation time.
Senegal will now await the winner of the other semi-final between Morocco and Nigeria, currently underway, as they prepare for Sunday’s final.
