The salaries of 2,563 government employees have been suspended after they failed to participate in a critical nationwide headcount, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has confirmed.
The measure, affecting January 2026 pay, follows a recommendation from the Auditor-General and reflects a strict effort to clean up the public payroll.
In a press release dated 30 January 2026, signed by Head of Public Relations Cephas N. Bosoo, the CAGD stated that while payments for most government staff have been processed, salaries for the affected personnel were withheld “for failing to avail themselves during the nationwide headcount exercise conducted across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in 2025 by the Ghana Audit Service.”
The verification exercise was intended to audit and sanitize the public payroll, helping eliminate ghost names and strengthen financial accountability.
The CAGD has urged those affected to contact the Ghana Audit Service immediately for clearance, stressing that employees must verify their employment status to secure reinstatement of their salaries.
The department reassured the public that, despite the action, it remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the timely payment of salaries in line with Public Financial Management Laws.
